Gazing across Slotermeer, can you imagine a lake here? It’s hard to believe, but where we stand was once the Slootermeer Lake. This Amsterdam neighborhood takes its name from that vanished body of water. Slotermeer’s story is one of transformation. The lake that gave it its name was drained way back in 1644, creating the Sloterdijkermeerpolder. Imagine that, a vast, empty polder. Later, between 1948 and 1956, that very polder was excavated to create the Sloterplas, a lake south of here. Slotermeer is more than just a neighborhood. It embodies the innovative urban planning of post-war Amsterdam. Part of the larger Westelijke Tuinsteden (Western Garden Cities), Slotermeer began to rise in 1951. Just a year later, the first residents moved into their new homes, eager to embrace this modern garden city. Slotermeer’s official opening by Queen Juliana on October 7, 1952, marked a significant moment in Amsterdam’s urban development. The neighborhood truly blossomed in the mid-1960s when construction was completed. Slotermeer’s streets offer a glimpse into Dutch history and culture. Many streets bear the names of World War II resistance fighters, former Amsterdam mayors, and prominent 19th and early 20th-century Dutch writers. At Slotermeer’s heart lies Plein ’40-’45, a bustling town square. Here, you’ll find an indoor mall, a variety of shops, and a local market that adds to the vibrant atmosphere. The Vrijheidscarillon (Freedom Carillon), a symbol of liberation, stands proudly in the square. Also gracing the square is the Garden City House, an office building that serves as a reminder of Slotermeer’s garden city origins. While Slotermeer has undergone urban renewal, much of its original charm remains. The Van Eesteren Museum, dedicated to the urban planner Cornelis van Eesteren, showcases the vision behind Slotermeer’s creation. A portion of Slotermeer near the museum was even declared a protected townscape in 2007. This preserved area allows visitors to step back in time and experience the ambiance of the early days. So, as you stroll through Slotermeer, remember the lake that once rippled beneath the sun. Remember the polder that emerged from its depths, and the vibrant neighborhood that eventually took root. Slotermeer is a testament to the power of transformation and a living embodiment of Amsterdam’s forward-thinking urban planning.
