Around 1400 a small wooden church stood near what is now Sloterdijk Poort. This humble structure marked the beginning of Sloterdijk village. It was strategically positioned near the Slooter river. A dam was built here for trade. This dam the Slooterdam gave the area its name. The church sadly was destroyed in 1573. It was burnt down by the Geuzen rebels fighting Spanish rule. A new church the Petruskerk was built in the 17th century. This church still stands today. It serves as a reminder of Sloterdijk Poort’s enduring spirit.
Sloterdijk Poort wasn’t always an industrial area. It was a thriving village. The Haarlemmertrekvaart canal brought prosperity in 1631. A toll booth was established along the towpath. This boosted the village’s economy. The arrival of the railway in 1839 was another turning point. The first train in the Netherlands ran from Sloterdijk to Haarlem. For fifty years though the train passed through without stopping.
Later in the 19th century Sloterdijk saw industrial growth. This growth continued through the 20th century. The construction of the new Sloterdijk railway station in 1956 almost destroyed the village. A great fire in 1860 had already devastated much of Sloterdijk. It was rebuilt afterward. The construction of the Coentunnel and a new business district threatened its existence. The Petruskerk and a few houses were saved. They were spared to preserve the town’s history.
The railway station moved again in 1985. It was moved northwest along a new rail spur to Zaandam. Tram service also moved to the new station. The station expanded in 1986. This was when the Schiphol line opened. The Amsterdam Metro arrived in 1997. Sloterdijk Poort’s modern infrastructure speaks to its continuous evolution. It shows its enduring connection to Amsterdam.
