Gazing upon this tranquil grassland, can you imagine a mighty castle once stood here? This is the site of Slot Abcoude, a castle shrouded in mystery. Its exact origins are unknown. It’s possible Zweder I van Zuylen built Slot Abcoude, sometime before 1268. He began calling himself “van Abcoude,” perhaps after marrying a Hendrika van Abcoude. Slot Abcoude is first mentioned in 1273. During the Kennemer Revolt, Gijsbrecht IV of Amstel destroyed the castle. Rebuilt in 1328, Slot Abcoude faced turmoil again during the Franco-Dutch War in 1672. Garrisoned soldiers protected it from French troops. After the French threat subsided, the States of Utrecht neglected the castle. By 1704, Slot Abcoude was dilapidated. Sold in 1715 to Theodorus de Leeuw, he partially restored it. He used it as a country residence until his death in 1744. Subsequent owners, uninterested in the medieval castle, let it decay. Around 1800, Slot Abcoude was uninhabitable and ruined. It became a stone quarry, its last remains leveled in 1860. Today, only the remnants of the moat hint at Slot Abcoude’s existence. This peaceful grassland whispers tales of a forgotten fortress.
