Gazing at the Sint Nicolaasbrug, have you ever considered its curious history? This isn’t just any bridge. The Sint Nicolaasbrug connects Prins Hendrikkade to Stationsplein, right in front of Amsterdam Centraal Station. Before 2016, it was known by less glamorous names: Middentoegangsbrug (Middle Access Bridge) or simply, Stationsbrug. It’s the middle of three bridges built for the station. The Sint Nicolaasbrug isn’t just a pathway; it’s a witness to Amsterdam’s growth. Built around 1876, it originally had iron beams, stone abutments, and a wooden deck. Imagine the clip-clop of horses and carriages crossing the Sint Nicolaasbrug. With the arrival of electric trams in 1902 and increasing car traffic, the bridge needed reinforcement. A concrete deck replaced the wooden one, making way for heavier vehicles. The Sint Nicolaasbrug saw another transformation starting in 1974. Architect Dirk Sterenberg designed a new, sturdier bridge with distinctive steel plating on the balustrades. A unique feature was added to the east side: a long, perforated steel bench. Locals nicknamed it the “Leugenaarsbank” (Liars’ Bench), a spot where tall tales were spun. It even served as a resting place for workers constructing the Noord/Zuidlijn metro line. On the west side, a temporary bridge accommodated the growing number of pedestrians crossing between Prins Hendrikkade and Damrak. The Sint Nicolaasbrug once carried trams in both directions, buses in one, and pedestrians. By 1980, trams only traveled into the city, flanked by a wide pedestrian path. The bus lane disappeared in 2008. Now, only trams and pedestrians traverse the Sint Nicolaasbrug. The bridge even shares a connection with Amsterdam’s patron saint, Saint Nicholas. Located near the Sint Nicolaaskerk, the bridge was renamed in his honor in 2016. So, the next time you cross the Sint Nicolaasbrug, remember its journey. It’s a testament to Amsterdam’s evolving transportation and a tribute to its patron saint.
