Nestled within Amsterdam’s Bos en Lommer neighborhood stands the Sint Jozefkerk. This isn’t just any church. It’s a testament to architectural innovation and community resilience. The Sint Jozefkerk first opened its doors in 1952. It was the first concrete church built as part of Amsterdam’s post-war expansion plan. Its architect, G.H.M. Holt, drew inspiration from early Christian churches in Italy and the concrete structures of French architects like Perret and Le Corbusier. The result was a striking blend of traditional basilica form and modern material. Imagine standing before its imposing concrete facade. The walls, a mix of concrete slabs and Limburgian natural stone, give it a unique texture. Look up at the light-filled nave supported by concrete pillars. Inside, the vast space could once accommodate 1130 people. The original ceiling paintings by Marius de Leeuw and the blue-tinted glass windows of the altar area added artistic flair. The Sint Jozefkerk served its community faithfully for nearly four decades. However, by 1990, dwindling attendance led to its deconsecration. But the story of the Sint Jozefkerk doesn’t end there. It was saved from demolition by engaged locals. It was reborn in 1996 as a climbing center, aptly named “Between Heaven and Earth”. This unusual transformation breathed new life into the building. Later, the Sint Jozefkerk became known nationwide as “de Vluchtkerk” (the Refugee Church), offering shelter to asylum seekers. Today, after extensive renovations, the Sint Jozefkerk has been reimagined as a vibrant children’s playground, Candy Castle. It stands as a symbol of adaptation. The Sint Jozefkerk’s journey reflects the ever-evolving spirit of Amsterdam. It’s a place where history, architecture, and community intertwine, offering a unique and inspiring story for all who visit.
