Peeking through the trees, the Sint Adelbertkapel stands as a testament to faith. This chapel wasn’t always a place of meditation. The Sint Adelbertkapel began as a Catholic cemetery chapel. It now serves as a peaceful meditation center.
The Sint Adelbertkapel was designed in 1923. Dom Bellot a French monk and architect created it. He lived at Oosterhout Abbey at the time. The Sint Adelbertkapel exhibits an Expressionist style. Its unique design captivates visitors.
Note the Sint Adelbertkapel’s octagonal shape. A small portal graces the front. At the back a sacristy features a small tower. The space inside divides into two sections. A lower side-aisle surrounds a higher central space. The upper part of the chapel acts as a clerestory. A large vault covers it.
Eight pillars stand between the two sections. Look closely at the materials. Bricks of different colors create patterns. Colored cement adds to the visual appeal both inside and out. S.B. van Sante an architect oversaw the construction. He adopted Bellot’s style for his own church in Grootebroek.
Though not in Amsterdam itself the Sint Adelbertkapel offers a serene escape. Its architectural details tell a story of devotion. The Sint Adelbertkapel is more than just a building. It represents a blend of architectural styles and spiritual purpose. It is a place where contemplation meets artistic expression. The Sint Adelbertkapel invites all to discover its quiet beauty.
