Established in January 1999 the Singapore City Gallery initially cost 4.2 million Singapore dollars. It was opened by Lim Hng Kiang the then National Development Minister. The initial projection was for only 36000 visitors annually. How wrong they were.
The gallery has undergone significant transformations. In 2004 a major renovation updated 80% of its exhibits. It was renamed the Singapore City Gallery. The Central Area Model expanded to include Orchard Road Kampong Glam Little India Bras Basah and Bugis. The model incorporated the latest plans for Marina Bay. By 2008 the gallery welcomed its millionth visitor. A further redesign in 2011 introduced a 270-degree panorama and an eight-player multimedia game. This earned it awards in the Singapore Design Award 2012. Now it boasts around 150000 visitors yearly.
Imagine the meticulous detail. The Central Area Model a breathtaking 11-meter by 10-meter masterpiece. Made from balsa wood and acrylic it’s a 1:400 scale replica. It’s more than a model. It’s a working tool for URA architects. They use it to simulate growth and explore options with communities developers and the government. This model showcases existing buildings and future plans.
The gallery isn’t just about looking. It’s about experiencing. Interactive exhibits are everywhere. The Central Area Discoverer is a treasure trove of over 100 video stories and 1000 pictures. It charts the city’s past present and future. It highlights innovative solutions to space constraints and population growth. It showcases the delicate balance between old-world charm and a cutting-edge cityscape. The Discoverer was even a finalist for the Stockholm Challenge Award in 2008.
