“What if I told you this polytechnic started as a college with just 116 students?” That’s the story of Ngee Ann Polytechnic. It began in 1963. It was first known as Ngee Ann College. The Ngee Ann Kongsi founded it. Ngee Ann Polytechnic is now a statutory board. It operates under Singapore’s Ministry of Education.

Initially, Ngee Ann College offered courses in language, commerce, and technology. The goal was to become a university. However, things changed. In 1968, it became Ngee Ann Technical College. This shift focused on technical education. In 1982, it officially became Ngee Ann Polytechnic.

Ngee Ann Polytechnic has expanded. It now occupies a 33.6-hectare campus. This is on Clementi Road. It offers many full-time courses. There are 39 courses across nine academic schools. These schools cover business, design, engineering, and more.

Ngee Ann Polytechnic is known for its business programs. Entrepreneurship education is a key focus. Many successful entrepreneurs are alumni. Sim Wong Hoo of Creative Technology is one example. Quek Siu Rui and Marcus Tan, co-founders of Carousell, also attended. Ian Ang, CEO of Secretlab, is another notable alumnus. Alan Tam, an award-winning actor, studied here. Anthony Chen, a filmmaker, is also an alumnus of Ngee Ann Polytechnic.

In 1990, Ngee Ann Polytechnic wanted to start a radio station. Mass communication students would produce the shows. These shows would focus on talk formats. However, students did not realize there were already stations on the AM band.

Ngee Ann Polytechnic also supports adult learners. The CET Academy provides part-time programs. Since 1985, it has trained over 180,000 adults. The NP Youth Academy offers leadership and personal development programs. The Christieara Programme supports high-performing students.

Ngee Ann Polytechnic is known for business excellence. It received the Singapore Quality Class Star Award. In 2014, it won the President’s Award for the Environment.
