The air hangs heavy with the scent of salt and mangrove. Welcome to Pulau Seletar.

Seletar Island a small jewel in Singapore’s waters has a rich history. It wasn’t always just a tranquil island.

Long ago the Orang Seletar a group of indigenous people called sea gypsies lived here. They thrived in the mangrove forests. Their peaceful life changed when the forests were cleared. They moved to Johor.

Later Seletar Island became a significant location for aviation. The British Royal Air Force established its first base here. Aviation legends like Kingsford-Smith and Amy Johnson landed here. Even Noel Coward and Charlie Chaplin visited. Seletar Airport served as Singapore’s first civilian airport before Kallang Airport opened in 1937. The island served the RAF until 1971. Then the Singapore Armed Forces took over.

Before the airport Seletar was a vast rubber plantation. The Singapore United Plantations Limited owned the land. The government bought it in 1923. They gave it to the RAF.

The island’s mangrove trees are impressive. The tallest reach eighty feet high. The island is also home to about 140 colonial bungalows. Some were homes for RAF officers. Now some are trendy restaurants like Wheeler’s Bungalow and The Summerhouse.

Seletar Island’s story is full of contrasts. It transitioned from a home for indigenous people to a vital military base. Then it became a hub for aviation. Now it’s known for its unique blend of history and modern development.

Today you can almost sense the echoes of the past. Imagine the roar of planes. Picture the bustling activity of a thriving airbase. Now look at the peaceful landscape. The story of Seletar Island is a testament to Singapore’s dynamic history. A story of transformation and resilience. A story waiting to be discovered.
