Gazing at Schiphol’s vast expanse, who could imagine a fleet of wooden ships sailing here? Right here at Schiphol Airport, we encounter “Schiffe für Schiphol,” a captivating wooden boat installation created by the German artist Ludger Gerdes. Completed in 1999, this artwork isn’t about actual seafaring. It’s a symbolic representation of journeys, arrivals, and departures. Schiffe für Schiphol consists of 36 small, meticulously crafted wooden boats. They rest on wooden stilts, appearing to float above the ground, a silent armada poised for an unseen voyage. Gerdes envisioned these boats as metaphors for the countless travelers passing through Schiphol. Each boat represents a personal journey, a unique story carried within the heart of every passenger. While Schiphol bustles with the energy of modern travel, Schiffe für Schiphol offers a moment of quiet reflection. It reminds us that amidst the whirlwind of departures and arrivals, every journey holds a unique meaning. The installation is a testament to the enduring human spirit of exploration and the constant search for new horizons.
