Beneath the trains rumbling at Amstelstation, lies a spot with a surprising history. We are standing in front of the Schietbaan. Not just any building, the Schietbaan is a place where sport shooters unite.
The Schietbaan is home to Schietsportvereniging Target. This is a cozy club of about 100 members. Founded in 1982, SV Target has become a place for both competitive and recreational shooters.
But what’s the appeal of shooting? Much like any sport, it is personal. Shooting is about focus, precision and calm. Hitting the target is harder than you think. What you see in movies has little to do with reality.
SV Target is special. It is the only club in Amsterdam with a KNSA crown certification. This shows their dedication. Volunteers run the club. They are instructors, bartenders and administrators. They work to make SV Target a fun and welcoming place. The club also hosts internal competitions and social events.
Inside, you will find a heated 25-meter range. It has five shooting points and an automatic target transport system. Members can practice with small-caliber rifles and most handguns. The club offers weapons in various calibers for its members.
After shooting, members can relax in the bar. They share tips and stories. But remember the old saying: “First shoot, then pour”.
Safety is the highest priority here at the Schietbaan. New members receive weeks of training. They learn gun safety. Only with instructor approval can they shoot independently.
Thinking of trying the sport? SV Target welcomes visitors for tours. If interested, you can book an intro lesson with an instructor. The lesson covers ammunition, targets and guidance. Remember to bring your ID. Also, no alcohol before shooting.
Becoming a member means joining a community. The annual fee is 210 euros. Members can shoot on Monday and Friday evenings. There are also costs for ammunition and targets. All shooters must join the KNSA. A background check is required for membership.
So, next time you hear the trains above, remember what lies beneath. The Schietbaan represents precision. It’s a place where the community comes together around a shared passion. A place for skill, focus and camaraderie.
