Imagine a ship, not sailing the seas, but moored in the heart of Amsterdam. That’s the feeling you get standing before the Scheepvaarthuis. This isn’t just a building. It’s a testament to Dutch maritime history.

Welcome to the Scheepvaarthuis, or Shipping House. It’s a prime example of the Amsterdam School of architecture. This building was once the headquarters for six leading Dutch shipping companies. Its design embodies the splendor and strength of the Dutch shipping industry.

Completed in 1916, the Scheepvaarthuis was designed by Johan van der Mey. He was assisted by Michel de Klerk and Piet Kramer. They created a masterpiece with expressive brickwork and maritime motifs. The building is a “Gesamtkunstwerk” a total work of art.

Notice the pointy corner of the building. It symbolizes the prow of a ship. At the top stands Neptune, the God of the sea. His wife, Amphitrite, is beside him holding a ship’s wheel. Around the building, you’ll spot 23 protruding heads. These represent explorers, sailors, and governors from the 17th century.

The facade is a tapestry of brickwork. Each brick is laid to create a dynamic, flowing surface. Stone carvings and wrought iron details add layers of visual interest. Sculptures of sailors, ships, and sea creatures adorn the facade. They tell a story of the sea.

Step inside and you’re greeted by a lavish interior. Stained glass windows, ornate woodwork, and custom furniture evoke a sense of maritime history. The large marble steps and wrought iron show waves of the sea. Look for Neptune’s trident and seahorses in the details.

The Scheepvaarthuis is full of maritime motifs. Ship prows, waves, and sea creatures are recurring themes. These aren’t just decorations. They create a cohesive narrative celebrating the building’s history. The stained-glass ceiling displays shipping routes from the 17th century.

After World War II, the building was occupied by the city’s public transport company. Modern elements were added, blending with the historic maritime aesthetics. In 2007, the Scheepvaarthuis was transformed into the Grand Hotel Amrath.

The renovation aimed to seamlessly integrate historic charm with modern luxury. Architects reinstated and enhanced the building’s maritime character. Artists contributed lithographs and custom designs. The hotel now displays a blend of historical reverence and contemporary elegance.

Today, the Grand Hotel Amrath is more than just a place to stay. It is a living museum. Its architecture and historical significance make it a must-visit. Staying here is like stepping back in time, while enjoying modern luxuries.

The Scheepvaarthuis stands as a unique landmark. It offers a glimpse into Amsterdam’s artistic and cultural heart. It’s a place where the past and present merge, surrounded by Dutch maritime history. As you leave, remember the Scheepvaarthuis. It is a ship moored in time, sailing through the ages.
