Nestled within Amsterdam’s Vondelpark, the Schapenweide Installation offers a unique charm. The Schapenweide, meaning “sheep meadow,” lives up to its name with stone sheep sculptures scattered across the area. These sheep, installed in 2016 by Van Swieten Kunstobjecten, add a touch of whimsy to this tranquil spot. The Schapenweide has a rich history, once a grazing ground for actual sheep and cows. It was part of the last section of the Vondelpark, designed by Louis Paul Zocher and added between 1874 and 1878. The area was meant to evoke a rural atmosphere. A nearby farmhouse even provided fresh milk from cows grazed in the park. For years, a stork has called the Schapenweide home, its nest a prominent feature. A beehive, managed by Smart Beeing, also resides here, promoting biological beekeeping and offering educational opportunities. While the Schapenweide may no longer host live sheep, the stone sculptures serve as a charming reminder of its pastoral past. They invite visitors to reflect on the park’s history and appreciate its evolving landscape.
