Ever wondered about the story behind that striking church on Neuburger Straße? That’s Sankt Anton in Passau. Sankt Anton stands tall in the south of Passau. Its elevated position makes it visible from afar.

Johann Baptist Schott designed Sankt Anton. This Munich architect built it between 1908 and 1910. The church showcases a neobaroque style. Sankt Anton became an Expositur in 1910. It achieved the status of a Stadtpfarrei or town parish in 1913.

However, in 1969, a significant change occurred. The neobaroque interior was largely removed. Yet, not all was lost. The red marble baptismal font remains. Josef Kagleder, a master stonemason from Passau, crafted it in 1914. Also saved were the altar paintings and Stations of the Cross. Gebhard Fugel created these in 1922.

A major renovation took place from 1998 to 1999. The interior of Sankt Anton was largely redesigned. The pews were arranged in an ellipse. They now surround the ambo and the people’s altar. These stand at the focal points of the ellipse. The Easter candle and baptismal font are in the west. The priest’s seat is in the east, before the reconstructed high altar. Friedrich Koller created the modern church fittings.

Sankt Anton faced a disturbing event on September 1, 2016. Vandalism and attempted arson occurred in the church. Despite this, Sankt Anton continues to be a place of worship.

Imagine Sankt Anton back in 1910. Parishioners filled the new church. The scent of fresh paint and incense mingled in the air. Sunlight streamed through the windows. It illuminated the neobaroque details. The sounds of prayer and hymns filled the space.

Picture the red marble baptismal font. A baby is being baptized. Water from the font symbolizes purification and new beginnings. The smooth marble feels cool to the touch. The gentle murmur of the priest’s voice echoes.

Fast forward to 1969. The church interior undergoes dramatic changes. Workers remove ornate decorations. The space feels emptier, more modern. Yet, the baptismal font remains a constant. It links the past with the present.

Envision the redesigned interior from 1999. Elliptical pews create a sense of community. The ambo and altar invite participation. The Easter candle glows with warmth. It represents hope and resurrection.

Sankt Anton stands as a testament to time. It has witnessed change and faced adversity. It has evolved, adapted, and endured. Today, Sankt Anton welcomes all. Its doors are open. It offers solace, reflection, and community. Its story continues to unfold with each passing year.
