Did Gustav Rosenstängl Jr. ever imagine his name would be forever etched onto this very building, the Rosenstängl-Haus? Here in Passau, on Grabengasse 22, stands a testament to a family’s artistic legacy. The Rosenstängl-Haus was more than just a shop. It was the heart of a porcelain painting dynasty. Gustav Jr., born in 1893, honed his skills under his father’s tutelage and the guidance of Professor Reiser in Munich. World War I left him with a heart condition, but his passion for porcelain burned brighter than ever. He poured his creativity into the family business. He even trained as a figure painter at the Porzellanmanufaktur Lenck. In 1924, Gustav Jr. took the reins, moving the shop to Grabengasse. He later opened a branch at Rindermarkt. His distinctive “Passauer Muster” design elevated him to the top of his field in Eastern Bavaria. He was the sole independent porcelain painter in Passau. The Rosenstängl-Haus wasn’t just a workshop. It was also a retail space and the family’s home. Gustav Jr.’s daughters, Lilly and Gabriele, inspired their own patterns. “Muschi-Muster” in blue was a tribute to Gabriele, while Lilly received personalized mocha cups. Sadly, Gustav Jr. died in 1949 during a Berchtesgaden vacation. His wife and daughters, Lilly and Gabriele, continued the business, even securing a coveted “Rosenthal Studio Abteilung” in 1963. This attracted customers from all over Eastern Bavaria and Austria, marking a boom for the Rosenstängl sisters. They ran the business until 1989, leaving a legacy of artistry and entrepreneurship within these walls of Rosenstängl-Haus.
