Two imposing bronze heads stare out at the world, seemingly locked in silent contemplation. This is the Rokinfontein, a striking sculpture gracing Amsterdam’s Rokin square. The Rokinfontein, also known as “Two Immovable Heads,” isn’t just a static piece of art. It was designed by Dutch artist Mark Manders to be a dynamic fountain. Water was meant to cascade down the heads, creating a mesmerizing waterfall effect. The Rokinfontein was unveiled in September 2017, commissioned by the city of Amsterdam and the Rokin Fontein Fund. This marked Manders’ first public project in Europe. The sculpture sits atop a marble pedestal, right outside Hudson’s Bay and the Scheltema bookstore. The area around the Rokinfontein offers a pleasant seating area. It was intended as a refreshing oasis during Amsterdam’s warm summer months. Unfortunately, the fountain’s water feature has been temporarily disabled due to overflowing issues. But the Rokinfontein remains a captivating sight. Its bronze figures, with their rough-hewn features, exude a sense of ancient wisdom. The interplay of light and shadow on the bronze surfaces adds to their enigmatic presence. The Rokinfontein stands as a testament to Manders’ unique artistic vision. It is a modern masterpiece that invites contemplation and sparks curiosity in all who encounter it. A short walk from Dam Square will bring you face to face with this remarkable sculpture. Even without the flowing water, the Rokinfontein offers a powerful visual experience.
