Envision a robust figure. This is Rembo. Here in Rembrandtpark, Rembo stands tall.

Rembo is a sculpture by Bastienne Kramer. It was erected in December 2005. The city asked Kramer to consider vandalism when designing it. She made vandalism part of the art.

Rembo is 3.20 meters high. It is made of green glazed ceramic. Look closely at the skin. See the detailed decorations? These are based on Frisian notch cuts.

Kramer sought to address vandalism with this artwork. When Rembo gets damaged, bronze replaces the ceramic. Over time, Rembo transforms. It slowly becomes a bronze sculpture. Thus, it embodies vandalism.

Kramer blends familiar and strange elements. She combines cultural expressions and styles. She uses craft techniques unconventionally. This adds layers of meaning to Rembo.

Rembo is a strong man. He stands with legs wide apart. His arms emerge from an impressive chest. They are relaxed. Yet, he is ready for action.

But approach closer. Something changes. Rembo’s eyes are wide open. He is laughing. He has ringlets. Flowers adorn them.

His tongue moves. Is Rembo whispering something? Or am I mistaken?

Zoom out again. Notice how the green giant merges with the trees? It blends into the bushes and grass. This giant becomes one with its surroundings.

Rembo whispers cheerful messages. These messages are not fairy tales. They are solid stories.

When the work is attacked, bronze inlays replace the damaged areas. Because of possible molestation, the ceramic sculpture changes slowly into a bronze sculpture.

Bastienne Kramer’s sculptures often draw inspiration from popular culture. She often uses sexist imagery. She puts them in a political context. Her work explores power dynamics in communities.

The stadscuratorium advised on Rembo’s repair in 2021. This shows the ongoing care for this evolving artwork.

So, is Rembo a victim of vandalism or a symbol of resilience? Perhaps it is both. This is a testament to art’s power. It changes with time and interaction. The next time you are here, observe Rembo carefully. What is it whispering to you?
