“A school for the future?” a student once mused standing before the Reinaert. Today we explore the story of this unique place in Amsterdam. The Reinaert was a school focused on preparing students for the digital age.

From 2020, the Reinaert became part of the Comenius Lyceum Amsterdam. Before that, it was known for its focus on vmbo-GL and vmbo-TL levels as well as a special two-year T/H bridge program and lwoo. The Reinaert emphasized information technology, services, products, and art. It aimed to give students a head start in a rapidly evolving world.

The Reinaert provided a safe and supportive environment. Teachers invested in strong relationships with students. Small class sizes allowed for individual attention. The school offered customized learning paths. These paths included homework support and sports. They also included cultural activities and exam training. All these activities were designed to promote personal development.

The school building has an interesting history. Designed by Evers and Sarlemijn in the style of the Bossche School, construction finished in 1960. It originally housed the Sint Hubertusschool. This school provided vocational training in the hospitality industry, teaching students to be cooks, waiters, bakers, and confectioners. Bakery and pastry programs remained until 2015. Later, the building served various purposes including temporary homeless shelter.

In 2007, the building was recognized for its architectural significance. It was placed on the Top 100 list of post-war heritage. In 2009, it gained official status as a municipal monument.

Look closely at the statue near the entrance. It depicts Saint Hubertus. Niel Steenbergen created this artwork. Saint Hubertus is the patron saint of hunters. Steenbergen presented him in a unique, almost two-dimensional style. It resembles the medallions he often designed.

The Reinaert is more than just a building. It embodies a commitment to education. It represents a bridge between tradition and innovation. Though the Reinaert name has faded into history, its legacy lives on through the students it shaped.
