Can you hear the waves crashing against the shore? They echo the final moments of RAF Lancaster ED 887 AJ-A. This memorial, right here, stands as a silent testament to a daring mission and the brave crew who perished just offshore. RAF Lancaster ED 887 AJ-A, coded AJ-A, was part of the legendary Dambusters raid. This daring mission, officially known as Operation Chastise, aimed to cripple the German war industry by breaching vital dams in the Ruhr Valley. On the night of May 16, 1943, this Lancaster, along with 18 others, took off from RAF Scampton. Their target: the Möhne, Eder, and Sorpe dams. AJ-A, piloted by Squadron Leader Henry Melvin Young, was part of the first wave. They successfully released their “Upkeep” bouncing bomb. This began the breach of the Möhne Dam, a crucial blow to German infrastructure. But the mission was fraught with danger. Returning from the raid, as they flew over the Dutch coast, AJ-A was shot down. Tragically, there were no survivors. The crew of RAF Lancaster ED 887 AJ-A – Young, Horsfall, Roberts, Nichols, MacCausland, Yeo, and Ibbotson – gave their lives for this daring mission. Their sacrifice is remembered not only here, at this RAF Lancaster ED 887 AJ-A memorial overlooking the sea where they fell, but also at the Bergen General Cemetery, where they are buried. The inscription on the memorial reads, “In memory of the crew of AVRO Lancaster ED887 AJ-A 617 Squadron RAF.” Let us take a moment of silence to honor their bravery. The constant roar of the waves serves as a poignant reminder of their courage and sacrifice.
