Atop the Raesberg a gentle breeze whispers tales of the past. Here in Amsterdam’s Nieuw-West stands a man-made hill. It’s a poignant reminder of Raesdorp a village swallowed by the Haarlemmermeer. Imagine a time before the polders before the Ringvaart. Raesdorp thrived near the Spieringmeer and the Lutkemeer. Its residents were farmers and fishermen. Their lives intertwined with the capricious Haarlemmermeer. The Waterwolf as the lake was nicknamed had a fierce reputation. In 1632 a devastating flood nearly erased Raesdorp. Only six to eight houses survived. The Wysentkade an ancient boundary from the 11th or 12th century marked the village’s edge near Osdorp. This kade separated lands developed from Velsen and Haarlem. The Ringvaart’s construction further altered the landscape. It bisected the land where Raesdorp once stood. The southern part became part of the Haarlemmermeerpolder. The Lutkemeer’s drainage finally dried the remaining land. Today the Raesberg stands as a memorial. Scattered stones evoke the lost buildings. Two bridge girders from a demolished 1817 bridge rest on the hill. These artifacts are remnants of a forgotten past. They provide tangible connection to Raesdorp’s history. This artificial hill called the Raesberg provides a powerful connection to Amsterdam’s past. It serves as a poignant reminder of the ever-changing relationship between humans and the land. A silent tribute to those who lived and lost their homes to the relentless Waterwolf. The Raesberg ensures the story of Raesdorp will not be forgotten. This hill provides a unique viewpoint over the landscape surrounding Raesberg. It offers a moment of reflection on the enduring legacy of Raesdorp. So stand here on the Raesberg and let the wind carry you back in time. Let the whispers of the past envelop you on this unique and memorable place.
