Did you know that R.K. Begraafplaats Buitenveldert is the oldest cemetery in Amsterdam? It is more than just a burial ground. It is a place with a unique history.
R.K. Begraafplaats Buitenveldert began in 1835. The Bishop of Haarlem dedicated a new church for the Sint Augustinus parish. This happened on June 14 of that year. The church was on Amstelveenseweg. That same day, the graveyard opened.
Space became limited. A new church was built in 1935. It stood at the corner of Amstelveenseweg and Kalfjeslaan. The old church became a cemetery chapel. In 1993, the old entrance was replaced. New construction occurred on Frederik Roeskestraat.
In March 1994, a spacious chapel was dedicated. It is still used for funerals, religious services and memorials. The chapel can hold up to 400 people.
Significant renovations took place in 2012. The buildings and entrance were improved. More spaces for mourning and meeting were created. A cozy brasserie was added. The condolence room was enlarged and given a warm feel. It can now accommodate over 200 people. There are also two 24-hour family rooms. These rooms are accessible with a special pass. A cooling space is available for viewings before the funeral.
R.K. Begraafplaats Buitenveldert is open to everyone. It welcomes people of all faiths. The cemetery offers general graves, family graves and children’s graves.
The grounds cover 7 hectares. The R.K. Parochie Amstelland Augustinuskerk owns the cemetery. It has a distinct look. Old and new grave monuments tell their own stories. Beautiful old trees stand throughout the cemetery.
The cemetery provides many facilities. These include a chapel, a coffee room and catering services. There are also spaces for viewings and family rooms. Music and DVD installations are available.
R.K. Begraafplaats Buitenveldert is easily accessible. It is near the A10 highway and public transportation. Free parking is available.
The brasserie is a welcoming place. People can enjoy coffee, lunch or a drink. Locals and visitors gather here. It is a place for working, laughing and crying. The brasserie is open Fridays and the first Sunday of each month.
