A whispered secret of Passau is carried on the wind. It speaks of the Prinzregent-Luitpold-Brücke, a bridge more affectionately known as the Hängebrücke, or suspension bridge. Since 1910, this 208-meter span has linked Passau’s Altstadt with the Angerstraße. Imagine standing here over 100 years ago. The year is 1911. Just a day before Prinzregent Luitpold’s 90th birthday, the bridge was dedicated to him.
The Prinzregent-Luitpold-Brücke wasn’t always embraced. Many citizens feared it would ruin Passau’s beauty. Historienmaler Ferdinand Wagner was very critical of the new construction. He said that nobody would destroy this wonderful place. But he lacks the eye for the beauty of this earth. Despite the initial resistance, the bridge became a symbol of Passau.
The bridge’s construction was a feat of engineering. The Maschinenfabrik Augsburg-Nürnberg AG built the “Drahtseilbrücke Passau” for 300,000 Mark. Workers blasted the Felswand to make way for the bridge. The metal construction weighed 350 tons. Two strong Litzenseile were stretched across the Donau. These cables could withstand 960 tons of pressure each.
Every construction phase was photographed. This makes the Prinzregent-Luitpold-Brücke the first building in Passau with almost complete photo documentation. The bridge underwent a rigorous load test. Construction workers placed nearly 300 tons of paving stones on the bridge. Six carts loaded with broken stones were also added. The bridge sank 299 millimeters in the middle. Chief Engineer Albrecht announced that the bridge had passed the test.
The Prinzregent-Luitpold-Brücke has had some damages over time. The bridge was partially destroyed in World War II. Only the concrete pylons and the downstream cable remained intact. Generous donations helped rebuild the bridge. In 1948, it reopened.
It is not very high above the water. The Prinzregent-Luitpold-Brücke has been hit by a cruise ship several times. In 2017 and 2018, the bridge underwent extensive renovations. Today, about 6,500 vehicles cross the bridge daily. The Prinzregent-Luitpold-Brücke remains a vital link in Passau.
Every year, the Passauer Brückenfest takes place on the Prinzregent-Luitpold-Brücke. The Altes Bräuhaus organizes this festival. The Prinzregent-Luitpold-Brücke connects more than just two sides of a river. It connects Passau’s past with its present. It is a testament to human ingenuity and resilience.
