A gentle sway. That’s how I first noticed the Prinses Amaliabrug. A subtle dance responding to the unseen currents beneath. This isn’t just any bridge. This is the Prinses Amaliabrug in Amsterdam a vital artery connecting the north and south. It replaced the older Beatrixbrug. You see this graceful bascule bridge opened in 2019. It’s a sleek modern structure. It spans the Tapsloot a broad waterway connecting to the Zaan River.

The Prinses Amaliabrug isn’t just a means of passage. It is part of the N246 a busy provincial road. Around 14000 vehicles cross it daily. But that’s not the whole story. This isn’t just a bridge for cars. There’s a two-way bike path on its western side.

The design is quite deliberate. It shares a striking similarity with the nearby Kogerpolderbrug. This was intentional. Both bridges follow a specific design plan. This created a unified architectural feel. They chose a streamlined deck and pointed pier heads for a sleeker look. To save time during construction they avoided underwater concrete. This resulted in a shallower cellar. The counterweight had a limited arm. It needed a high specific weight.

The original Beatrixbrug a more massive structure opened in 1955. It even had a little bridge keeper’s house in the water. The decision to replace it wasn’t arbitrary. There was another Beatrixbrug a few kilometers away. To avoid confusion the new bridge was renamed Prinses Amaliabrug. The Royal Family approved the change. The project to replace both bridges cost around 42 million euros.

The province insisted the new bridge be in the exact same spot. So a temporary movable bridge was built. It ensured the waterway remained open. This temporary bridge was special. It was modular and fully reusable. It’s a design easily adapted for future projects. It operated not with counterweights but with powerful cylinders.

The Prinses Amaliabrug opened in August 2019. The official inauguration was in September. It is a symbol of modern engineering and careful urban planning. It efficiently connects communities while maintaining the unique character of the Amsterdam waterways. It is not just a bridge. It’s a testament to careful planning. It’s a seamless blend of functionality and aesthetics. A tribute to the past and a bridge to the future. The Prinses Amaliabrug truly deserves its name. It is a princess among bridges.
