Gazing across Polder Meerzicht, can you imagine a time before the Amsterdamse Bos? This polder, a Dutch marvel of land reclamation, predates the famous forest. Polder Meerzicht whispers tales of a wilder era. It’s a relic of the old landscape, a time when the Haarlemmermeer was a vast, tempestuous lake. Imagine strong southwesterly winds whipping the waters of the Nieuwe Meer towards the Koenenkade. The surrounding lands, including what is now Polder Meerzicht, were waterlogged and useless, dominated by reeds and pollard willows. This area remained largely untouched until the mid-19th century. The Haarlemmermeer was finally drained. A section of the Nieuwe Meer’s banks was diked, giving birth to Polder Meerzicht. Today, as you stroll along the dike encircling this 336,503 m² polder, you can appreciate its unique character. It’s a haven for birdwatchers, a peaceful retreat within the bustling Amsterdamse Bos. Look for meadow flowers like the cuckoo flower and hedgehog buttercup in spring. You might even spot some iconic Dutch meadow birds like the black-tailed godwit, Eurasian curlew, or Northern lapwing. Polder Meerzicht is more than just a pretty spot. It’s a living testament to the ingenuity of the Dutch people and their relationship with water. It’s a place where history and nature intertwine, offering a glimpse into Amsterdam’s past.
