Over the Planciusspoorbrug the trains rumble. A symphony of steel and concrete. This isn’t just any bridge. It’s a vital artery of Amsterdam’s rail network. Connecting Amsterdam Centraal Station to Amsterdam Sloterdijk. Carrying trains to Haarlem and Zaandam. Even Schiphol Airport.
The Planciusspoorbrug wasn’t always this imposing structure. Its story begins much earlier. In around 1875 the Planciusstraat was named. The street and the bridge share a name. Both honor Petrus Plancius a famous astronomer and cartographer. A fitting tribute for a bridge that connects so much.
Back then a viaduct wasn’t needed. Trains from Zaandam and Haarlem ended at Amsterdam Willemspoort. Now Westerpark. The building of Amsterdam Centraal Station changed all that. A new connection was essential. A viaduct was built to extend the railway further into the city. This involved a complex engineering feat. The railway ran along a raised embankment. The viaduct needed countless arches to navigate the city’s layout.
Initially there was a simple girder bridge for trams. Then a second arched bridge for other vehicles. Two parallel bridge decks existed for a time. One old one new and entirely steel. In 1957 the road was widened. The old bridge combination was removed to make way for a new steel bridge. This led to the tram tracks being stacked one on top of each other. It also resulted in regular damage to the overhead tram wires. Large trucks were repeatedly damaging them. The solution involved building a section of track that avoided this problem.
From 1991 to 1994 a major upgrade happened. The existing bridges were demolished. They were replaced by the current entirely concrete Planciusspoorbrug. This impressive structure now carries six tracks. It’s a solid and substantial piece of infrastructure. The bridge’s western end almost seamlessly merges with the Houtmanspoorbrug. another important Amsterdam bridge.
The construction caused some disruptions. Tram line 3 was temporarily shortened. A temporary crossover point was installed. This point was paid for by the railway. It was intended to allow trams to use two-way vehicles. That plan didn’t quite work. The necessary number of two-way trams wasn’t available. Buses temporarily took over. After construction the crossover was removed. The solution created space for double tracks with a clear path underneath. The Planciusspoorbrug stands as a testament to engineering progress. A landmark that quietly yet efficiently connects Amsterdam’s past and present. A vital link in this vibrant city’s transport system.
