Four stainless steel blocks reach for the sky. This is the Piramide 71. Created by sculptor Jan Goossen it stands as a testament to his unique vision. Originally located on Amsterdam’s Spui it was moved in 1987. Its new home is near the Gaasperplas. Goossen intended the cuts in the steel to echo the rhythm of building facades. The pyramid shape he envisioned as referencing the masts of sailing ships. However this interpretation doesn’t quite fit its current location. There are no houses or boats nearby. The Spui’s history as a 13th-century harbor explains the nautical reference. The sculpture was part of Goossen’s broader plan for the Spui area. This plan sadly never fully materialized. The Piramide 71 lacked the space it deserved. A planned pedestrian area never came to fruition. Now the Piramide 71 stands alone. A striking monument to the artist’s vision. Its simple form belies a complex history. It’s a silent observer of Amsterdam’s ever-changing urban landscape. The Piramide 71. A piece of Amsterdam’s artistic heritage. A reminder that even the most ambitious plans can be altered by time and circumstance. Yet the sculpture endures a powerful symbol of artistic perseverance. A testament to the enduring power of art. Look closely at the steel. Can you see the rhythm of Amsterdam’s past? The Piramide 71. A piece of Amsterdam’s soul.
