Did the vibrant colors of Pfarrkirche Sankt Paul catch your eye? This church isn’t just a feast for the eyes. It’s a survivor, a testament to Passau’s enduring spirit. Pfarrkirche Sankt Paul is the oldest parish church in Passau. A Romanesque church dedicated to St. Paul stood on this very spot as early as 1050. Imagine the history it has witnessed. The church we see today, however, is a Baroque masterpiece, completed in 1678 under the skilled hand of Carlo Antonio Carlone. The original church was tragically destroyed, not once, but twice, by devastating city fires in 1512 and 1662. Each time, Passau rebuilt, and Pfarrkirche Sankt Paul rose again, stronger and more beautiful than before. Notice the contrast between the creamy pink facade and the opulent black and gold interior. This dramatic color scheme creates a truly unforgettable visual experience. As you step inside, look up at the magnificent vaulted ceiling, a bright counterpoint to the dark grandeur of the high altar, side altars, and pulpit. The high altar is a work of art in itself, adorned with Franz Werner Tamm’s powerful painting, “Beheading of Apostle Paul.” Another masterpiece graces the interior, Johann Michael Rottmayr’s poignant “Lamentation of Christ.” Interestingly, the delicate stucco work that adds a touch of elegance to the church wasn’t added until 1909, centuries after the church’s completion. A curious detail about Pfarrkirche Sankt Paul lies in its connection to the city’s past. The sacristy, the room where priests prepare for services, is actually housed within the superstructure of the neighboring Paulus Arch, Passau’s oldest city gate. This unusual architectural feature is a tangible link to Passau’s rich history. One final, intriguing fact. The church spire you see today isn’t quite the same as the one that graced the Passau skyline for centuries. In 1950, the spire was shortened by a significant 14 meters due to structural concerns. Though slightly diminished in height, Pfarrkirche Sankt Paul continues to stand tall, a symbol of resilience and a beacon of faith in the heart of Passau.
