Hidden in plain sight. That’s the best way to describe the Church of St. Peter and St. Paul, also known as De Papegaai, or The Parrot. Tucked away on the busy Kalverstraat, Amsterdam’s busiest shopping street, this Roman Catholic church offers a tranquil escape from the bustling city. Most people walk right past it.

The Church of St. Peter and St. Paul has a fascinating history. Back in the 17th century, Catholicism couldn’t be practiced openly here. So, a secret church was built in the garden of a bird trader. This explains the church’s nickname, “De Papegaai,” and the parrot statue on its facade.

Take a closer look at the narrow Neo-Gothic facade. You’ll see statues of Saint Joseph and a perched parrot. These give a hint of the hidden gem within.

In 1848, the temporary church was replaced with a new one. Architect Gerrit Moele designed it. Even then, it remained hidden from the public eye. The entrance on Kalverstraat was extended in 1899, making it more visible.

Step through the revolving door and prepare to be amazed. The height, space, and depth of the church will surprise you. It’s much larger than it appears from the outside.

Inside the Church of St. Peter and St. Paul, the neo-Gothic inventory from the construction period has been preserved. Admire the wood-carved high altar depicting the marriage of Joseph and Mary. The pulpit dates back to 1850.

Today, the Church of St. Peter and St. Paul is one of the two parochial churches in the St Nicholas Roman Catholic parish in Amsterdam. It still celebrates Sunday Mass in Latin with Gregorian chant. The church extends an invitation to people seeking quiet reflection. You are welcome regardless of religious beliefs.

The Church of St. Peter and St. Paul stands as a testament to Amsterdam’s history of religious tolerance and hidden treasures. Take a moment to step inside and experience the tranquility of this unique church. You will soon forget that you are on the busiest shopping street in Amsterdam. The Church of St. Peter and St. Paul offers a peaceful sanctuary amidst the hustle and bustle.
