Here stands the Parlevinkerbrug. It is more than just a way to cross from one side to the other. The Parlevinkerbrug is a testament to Amsterdam’s innovative spirit.

This bridge in Amsterdam-Noord exists since 1976. The Parlevinkerbrug is bridge number 971. The IJdoornlaan was extended. The municipality chose to build that road on a dike. This separated traffic flows. Slow traffic goes under, and fast traffic goes above the Parlevinkerbrug.

Below the Parlevinkerbrug runs the Parlevinkerpad. It is about 700 meters long. It is for pedestrians and cyclists only. The path runs through a green area in the Banne Buiksloot.

The architect Dirk Sterenberg designed the Parlevinkerbrug. He worked for the Dienst der Publieke Werken. He created a series of bridges around the number 970. The Parlevinkerbrug is one of at least two similar bridges. The Statenjachtbrug is the other one. It has yellow railings. The Parlevinkerbrug railings are blue.

For years, the bridge was nameless. In 2018, the city named it after the path below. That path gets its name from the term “parlevinker” in shipping.

The Parlevinkerbrug is 23 meters wide. It provides insufficient daylight underneath. Lighting was installed to help. The colors still created an unsafe feeling. To fix this, the abutments were painted. Noordside and United Painting created the artwork. They used trompe-l’oeil to trick the eye. Hexagonal concrete posts fill the slopes. They are painted to look square.

The Parlevinkerbrug ensures passage. It connects two neighborhoods in Banne Buiksloot. The Parlevinkerbrug is more than a crossing. It is a piece of Amsterdam’s urban design. It blends form and function. It solves traffic issues. It also adds art to public spaces.

The Parlevinkerbrug stands almost entirely between buildings. The north side connects directly to a green strip. It is a unique combination of urban and natural elements. The bridge provides safe passage for pedestrians and cyclists. It also enhances the area’s aesthetic appeal.

So next time you cross the Parlevinkerbrug, remember its story. Remember the architect’s vision. Remember the art that brightens the space beneath. The Parlevinkerbrug represents Amsterdam’s ingenuity.
