Park De Kuil is more than just a green space in Amsterdam Nieuw-West. It’s a story of transformation. Initially a low-lying area known as “The Pit” it was a vacant lot used for informal sports. Locals let their dogs run there.
In the early 2000s this changed. Landscaping architect Pieter Boekschooten envisioned something new. He created Amsterdam’s first ecological park in Geuzenveld. This wasn’t easy. The surrounding dyke leaked causing drainage problems. The soggy ground was a challenge.
The solution was ingenious. Boekschooten dug out the wet spots. This created ponds. The excavated earth became new playgrounds. Problem solved. A beautiful park emerged from the mud.
Today Park De Kuil offers more than just recreation. It’s a testament to creative problem-solving. It’s a haven of nature amidst urban development. You can find several bridges here. Brug 1828 the Torenpoortbrug is a standout. Designed by Gert Vos it’s a unique piece of architectural art. Two smaller wooden bridges Brug 2382 and Brug 2396 add to the charm.
