Picture this. A 16th-century legal battle unfolds. The Oude Waver river is at its heart. It’s not just water. It’s a flashpoint. The Proosdij of Sint-Marie in Utrecht and the city of Amsterdam clash. They fight over the right to collect tithes along the Oude Waver. Amsterdam claims it bought these rights in 1529 from Reinoud III of Brederode. This included the Ambachtsheerlijkheid of Amstelveen and Nieuwer-Amstel. The dispute rages for years. It goes before the Hof van Holland from 1545 to 1559. Then it goes to the Grote Raad of Mechelen from 1560 to 1562. The schout of Ouderkerk aan de Amstel represents Amsterdam. Finally in 1551 and 1559 Amsterdam wins. The Oude Waver becomes more than a river. It becomes a symbol of Amsterdam’s power and legal victories. The hamlet of Waver sits peacefully beside it. It’s a small place. About 40 houses line the north side of the Oude Waver. This quiet spot witnessed a momentous legal struggle. Today it’s a reminder of Amsterdam’s tenacious spirit. It’s also a beautiful reminder of its history. The Oude Waver flows on. It quietly tells its tale of legal battles and steadfastness.
