In 1985, the Oude Tramwegbrug emerged, a modest bridge in Amsterdam-Noord. It connects Buikslotermeerdijk and Termieterweg, a pathway leading to the charming hamlet of ‘t Nopeind. The Oude Tramwegbrug gracefully arches over the ringvaart, a canal that encircles the polder, guiding you towards the Kleine Blauwe Polder where Termieterweg lies. For years, this bridge remained nameless, a quiet servant to the community. Then, on November 9, 2018, the Oude Tramwegbrug finally received its official title. The name, suggested by the Centrale Dorpenraad within Landelijk Noord, echoes the history of the Waterlandse tram. This tram, operating from 1888 to 1956, once had a bridge and stop near this very spot. The stop, named Zunderdorp, was located on Termietergouw, about 500 meters east of the current Oude Tramwegbrug. The bridge’s design reflects a more modern era than its name suggests. Concrete pillars and yokes support the structure. These hold either sturdy wooden or steel beams. The deck, crafted from wooden planks, is topped with an anti-slip layer for safe passage. White-painted wooden railings, bolted securely to the overspanning, offer a simple elegance. A thoughtful narrowing in the bridge’s center encourages mindful sharing of the pathway.
