Could a slaughterhouse hold the key to women’s health? Here at the Amsterdam offices of Organon, the answer is a resounding yes. Organon’s story began in 1923, not in a sterile lab, but in a partnership between University of Amsterdam physiologist Ernst Laqueur and Saal van Zwanenberg, owner of a slaughterhouse in Oss. Organon’s journey started with insulin production. It quickly expanded to estrogens, with estrone, marketed as Menformon, becoming a key product in the 1930s. Organon’s innovative spirit led to acquisitions, including the Newhouse research site in Scotland in 1948 and Diosynth, an active-pharmaceutical-ingredient producer, in 2004. Organon’s presence in the Netherlands played a crucial role in its evolution. It became part of Akzo Nobel, then Schering-Plough, and later Merck & Co. In 2021, Organon was reborn as an independent company, reaffirming its commitment to women’s health. Today, Organon’s portfolio includes over 60 medicines and products in various therapeutic areas, from contraceptives like Nexplanon to fertility treatments like Puregon. Organon remains a vital part of the Dutch life sciences ecosystem. It continuously works to improve women’s health through research and strategic collaborations. Organon’s Amsterdam offices are a testament to its enduring legacy, a reminder of how a unique partnership, forged nearly a century ago, continues to impact women’s health globally.
