Studio Tjep, an Amsterdam design firm, created this space. Frank Tjepkema is the designer. Studio Tjep is known for practical designs with playful elements in public spaces. Think of the bicycle wheel fences at the Rokin. Or the filigree towers near ventilation houses in Spaarndammerbuurt.
Tjepkema said the assignment was for a meeting place. It also needed to be a platform. A platform for all kinds of events. Buurt activities. Bands. Presentations. Anything that supports a public neighborhood function.
Ontmoetingsplaats 21e eeuw consists of dark gray and rust colored blocks. There are also benches in curly shapes. They are the same rust color. The designer considered a significant risk. A stage is great only when occupied. An empty stage can be sad. So, it needed to be more than just a stage when not in use.
The solution was a sculpture. It could transform into a platform with just a few actions. It could also easily revert back. There was a pilot edition before the unveiling of Ontmoetingsplaats 21e eeuw. This was to test the kinds of performances the neighborhood wanted.
Studio Tjep provided a special drilling machine. This lowers the dark gray blocks. Residents in the surrounding flats get the best view. They see the square blocks transform into elegant curls. Tjepkema explains that the organic forms connect to Amsterdam’s historic architecture. This contrasts with the Waterlandplein’s modern architecture. It is typically very businesslike.
The benches’ playful shapes reflect the music flowing from the stage. The neighborhood uses the stage and benches a lot. Photos on social media show autumn and Christmas markets. Also, the Waterland Run and Easter celebrations are there.
Interestingly, the dark gray blocks are rarely lowered in winter. This is when the stage is not in use. Apparently, the building manager has the drilling machine. He needs to use it. Otherwise, the transformation doesn’t happen.
