Nikolakloster

Have you ever wondered what lies behind this imposing, towering structure? Look up and see the pointed Gothic steeple of St. Nikola, rising above the rooftops of Passau. This is the Nikolakloster, a place intertwined with history, faith, and the pursuit of knowledge.
It all began in 1070 when Bishop Altmann of Passau, a close confidante of Empress Agnes, established this space as a home for Augustinian canons. Originally, the canons lived a life of piety and study, following the strict guidelines dictated by St. Augustine.
A devastating event shaped the Nikolakloster forever – an earthquake in 1348, originating in the Friuli region of Italy. It rippled through Passau, severely damaging the original church. Rather than rebuilding in the existing Romanesque style, the canons chose to embrace the new Gothic architecture. Today, the elegant Gothic style defines the church’s structure, a reminder of its resilience against the forces of nature.
The monastery was not always a center of peace. In the tumultuous 16th century, Luther’s Reformation swept through Passau, challenging the church’s teachings. One of the canons, Thomas Gunner, embraced the Reformation, but was ultimately forced to flee. The monastery was engulfed in the debates of the Reformation, ultimately leading the canons to a renewed devotion to Catholicism.
Throughout the centuries, the monastery has been a beacon of learning, a testament to the enduring power of faith. It later became a place of military importance, with the Nicolai Barracks taking root within its well-preserved walls.
After World War II, the Nikolakloster embraced another transformation. The Deutschordensschwestern found a new home within its walls, bringing with them a renewed sense of purpose.
The Nikolakloster transitioned once more. The creation of the University of Passau in 1978 transformed the monastery into a place of academic exploration, echoing its origins as a place of learning and dedication to knowledge. Today, the Nikolakloster serves as a hub for languages, with its language center within a building that embodies centuries of history.
