Picture this a quaint village nestled beside a river. This is Nieuwer Ter Aa. Its history stretches back centuries a quiet witness to the bustling waterways that once connected Amsterdam and Utrecht. The Aa River its namesake was once a vital artery. Boats carrying goods and people plied its waters. This all changed with the construction of the Nieuwe Wetering a canal that effectively bypassed the river. This made the Aa River obsolete.

Nieuwer Ter Aa itself wasn’t always so peacefully isolated. In fact this village has witnessed dramatic changes. A castle Ter Aa once stood proudly near the village. This impressive structure dating back to at least 1106 met its end during the French invasion of 1673. It was completely destroyed. In its place rose Quackenburg an estate which eventually gave way to modern homes. All that remains of that old castle are the residential buildings on its site.

The heart of Nieuwer Ter Aa the Dutch Reformed Church proudly stands. Its tower a sturdy sentinel dates back to around 1400. However this is not the original church. An older 12th century church stood here before. It was replaced in the late 15th century. In 1956 this beautiful church received much needed restoration. It was carefully and lovingly restored to its former glory. The church continues to stand as a symbol of Nieuwer Ter Aa’s enduring spirit.

Beyond the church Nieuwer Ter Aa boasts another relic of its past the Oukoper Molen. This polder mill dating from 1644 served its purpose. It was rebuilt in 1839. It diligently removed excess water from the polder. It finally retired in 1961. A more modern diesel powered pumping station replaced it. This modern pumping station proved more efficient and reliable.

In 1840 Nieuwer Ter Aa was home to a modest 189 people divided between the municipalities of Ruwiel and Loenersloot. Today its population has grown to nearly 500. Yet it still retains its charm and its peaceful atmosphere. It is a testament to the enduring spirit of the people who have called this village home. Nieuwer Ter Aa is a place of quiet dignity. It holds its history close. It welcomes you to explore its gentle charms.
