Have you ever seen a hand-operated lock? The Nieuwendammersluis is just that. Right here in Amsterdam-Noord this historical lock stands proudly. It’s more than just a waterway regulator. It’s a living testament to Amsterdam’s maritime past.
Originally a sea lock the Nieuwendammersluis played a vital role in protecting Waterland. It formed part of the Waterlandse Zeedijk and the Noorder IJ- en Zeedijk. These dikes protected the area from devastating floods. Around 1870 things changed. The construction of the North Sea Canal and the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal altered the IJ’s connection to the Zuiderzee. The Zuiderzee is now the IJsselmeer. Much of the land south of the dike was reclaimed. This area is now the Nieuwendammerham neighborhood.
Despite these changes the Nieuwendammersluis remains functional. It connects to the IJ via the “Grote Haven” of the old village of Nieuwendam and Zijkanaal K. The lock itself has wooden pointed doors and is operated manually. Self-service isn’t an option. One of the sluice gates remains locked. A volunteer lock keeper opens it on request. The Hoogheemraadschap Hollands Noorderkwartier (HHNK) manages the lock.
Interestingly four buildings surround this historic lock. A wooden house at Nieuwendammerdijk 297 houses the café ‘t Sluisje. It’s been there since 1904. A stone house at number 301 housed a bakery until 1974. The Kroese family was known for their duivekater a traditional sweet bread. Another wooden house at number 303 is also a national monument. Finally there’s a stone lock keeper’s house at number 270 near the Grote Haven.
The Nieuwendammersluis isn’t just a lock. It’s a piece of living history. It’s a hub of activity. The IJ-buurtveer a boat connection runs on Sundays during the summer months. This ferry stops right by the Nieuwendammersluis. Think of the stories these old walls could tell. Stories of bustling trade and the ebb and flow of Amsterdam’s history. Each creak of the lock each passing boat whispers tales of a bygone era. And it all starts right here at the Nieuwendammersluis.
