Across the Amstel from the quaint village of Nes aan de Amstel, you’ll find Nessersluis. Nessersluis isn’t just a name; it’s a whisper from the past, a story etched in the flow of the river. It speaks of a time when this tranquil spot pulsed with the rhythm of commerce and connection. Imagine the year 1674. The surrounding peatlands, once level with the Amstel, had sunk dramatically. This created a significant challenge for boats navigating the Bijleveld canal, which connected the Oude Rijn to the Amstel. That year, the authorities announced the construction of four crucial locks. Nessersluis was one of them, a lifeline for the vital trade route. In its early days, Nessersluis was simply “Aen ’t Bylevelt, Aan den Amstel” or “Sluys in den Bylevelt,” reflecting its isolated location. The name “Nessersluis” eventually emerged, borrowed from Nes aan de Amstel, its neighbour across the river. “Nes,” meaning “nose” or a point of land extending into the river, though the landform itself has long since disappeared. In the 17th and 18th centuries, Nessersluis thrived. Several inns catered to travelers, and the area buzzed with fishermen and peat cutters. Nessersluis became a hub of activity, its existence intertwined with the lifeblood of the river. Sadly, after 1850, Nessersluis fell into decline. Even the renovation of the lock in 1849 couldn’t halt its inevitable fate. By 1896, the Nessersluis lock was dismantled, its physical presence erased by the currents of time. Yet, the story of Nessersluis didn’t end there. In 2015, a poignant artwork was installed, a tribute to the vanished lock. It serves as a tangible reminder of the vital role Nessersluis once played. It also prompts us to reflect on the ever-changing landscape and the stories it holds. So, as you stand here, overlooking the spot where Nessersluis once stood, let your imagination rebuild the bustling scene. Hear the creak of the lock gates, the shouts of the boatmen, and the laughter spilling from the nearby inns. Nessersluis may be gone, but its story continues to flow, carried on the waters of the Amstel.
