Founded in 1958, the Nederlandse Film en Televisie Academie has a rich history. Dr. Jan Marie Peters established it as a two-year program. By 1960, it gained official recognition. In 1965, the curriculum expanded into a four-year study. For the first time, it offered three specializations. These included artistic direction like directing and screenwriting. There was also a technical side. This covered camera work, sound, and editing. Lastly, they provided a production direction.

Electronic media’s influence grew. By 1975, film and television held equal status in the curriculum. The name officially changed to Nederlandse Film en Televisie Academie. However, in 2013, it reverted to Nederlandse Filmacademie.

Initially, the Nederlandse Film en Televisie Academie resided in Oude Hoogstraat. Later, it moved to Overtoom. In 1999, the academy found its current home. The building at Markenplein was designed by Koen van Velsen.

The academy is a faculty of the Amsterdamse Hogeschool voor de Kunsten. The AHK facilitates collaboration. It offers joint educational projects. It also promotes artistic and theoretical research.

The Nederlandse Film en Televisie Academie offers specializations. Students can focus on fiction directing or documentary directing. Screenwriting is another option. The Pathé provides the Tuschinski Award. This award goes to the director. They must have the best graduation work.

He is known for cinematography in “Die Hard.” He also directed “Twister” and “Speed.” Stephan Brenninkmeijer is another alumnus. He works as a director and film producer. Mike van Diem directed “Character.” Paul Verhoeven attended but didn’t finish his studies here. He went on to direct “Total Recall” and “Basic Instinct”. These alumni demonstrate the academy’s impact.
