Doesn’t it feel like you’ve stepped onto another planet here at NDSM-pier? I mean, the raw energy of creativity mixes with the ghosts of industry. This pier has stories etched into its very concrete.

NDSM-pier wasn’t always a haven for art and expression. Once upon a time, this was the heart of Amsterdam’s shipbuilding industry. The Nederlandsche Dok en Scheepsbouw Maatschappij, or NDSM, thrived here. For much of the 20th century, NDSM was a cutting-edge shipbuilding facility. It employed around 6000 workers. They assembled tankers, freighters and passenger ships for customers across the globe.

But like many European shipyards, NDSM faced hard times. The oil crisis and increased global competition led to its bankruptcy in 1984. The area fell into disrepair. The hangars and warehouses became silent giants.

Then came the artists, squatters and skaters. They saw potential in the derelict space. By 2001, these creatives united. They formed the Kinetisch Noord Foundation. They sought to transform NDSM into a cultural breeding ground. The city council supported this vision. Subsidies helped businesses and artists flourish.

Today, NDSM-pier is a testament to Amsterdam’s spirit of reinvention. Where ships once launched, now art installations rise. Graffiti covers warehouse walls. Festivals fill the open spaces with music and energy. The NDSM-pier is a place of constant change.

Look around you. You might spot the Greenpeace headquarters. Their ships are often moored here. Perhaps you’ll catch a glimpse of Kapitein Anna. This old paddle steamer offers private dining and basic rooms.

Don’t miss the STRAAT Museum. It opened in 2020. It is a must-visit for street art lovers. The museum showcases over 160 artworks. These were created by more than 150 artists from around the world.

Another highlight is the NDSM Loods. This former shipbuilding shed is now an art city. About 200 people work in its 70 studios. This 8500 m² listed building hosts the Kunststad project and regular art exhibitions.

Notice the towering crane. This is the Faralda Crane Hotel. It offers three luxury suites with incredible views. It is certainly a unique experience.

If you are here on the weekend, check out the IJ-Hallen flea market. It’s the largest regular flea market in the Netherlands.

NDSM-pier is more than just a collection of sights. It’s a living breathing testament to Amsterdam’s resilience. From shipbuilding giant to cultural haven, the NDSM-pier embodies the city’s creative soul. The NDSM-pier offers a glimpse into Amsterdam’s alternative side. So take it all in. Explore the art and soak in the unique atmosphere. The NDSM-pier is a place that will stay with you long after you leave.
