Imagine flames frozen in steel. This is the Monument voor de Tachtigers. It stands here in Oosterpark. This artwork commemorates a significant literary movement.

The Tachtigers or Eightiers were a group of Dutch writers. They revolutionized 19th-century Dutch literature. They sought a new approach to writing. The Tachtigers valued matching style to content. Intimate emotions required an intimate writing style.

Jan Wolkers created this sculpture in 1992. He drew inspiration from a poem. Hendrik Marsman wrote it after Herman Gorter’s death in 1927. Gorter was an important Tachtiger poet. Marsman’s poem describes Gorter. It calls him “van vuur, een golf, een vlam, een stromend stuk natuur.” This translates to “of fire, a wave, a flame, a flowing piece of nature”.

Wolkers captured these elements in steel. The Monument voor de Tachtigers features two stainless steel points. They symbolize a wave and a flame. The sculpture embodies the energy of the Tachtigers.

Wolkers was not only a sculptor. He was also a writer. He considered himself primarily a visual artist. He once said, “I am a sculptor who has written a book.” His artistic journey began in 1941. He studied at academies in Leiden, The Hague, and Amsterdam.

Initially, Wolkers created figures of women and animals. Later, he shifted to abstract designs. He worked with glass, perspex and stainless steel. The Monument voor de Tachtigers showcases his abstract style.

Look closer and notice a metal box. Behind the glass is Marsman’s poem. It immortalizes Gorter. The monument was unveiled on December 18, 1992. It is a tribute to the Tachtigers’ legacy.

The sculpture is near the park’s pond. It stands in the southern reed bed. The Witsenhuis is also nearby. Willem Witsen, a Tachtiger, lived there. It was a meeting place for artists.

Nearby, you can find a poem by Jacques Perk in a waterproof display case. It provides context about the sculpture. The Monument voor de Tachtigers is more than just art. It is a reminder of a vibrant literary past. It connects us to the writers who shaped Dutch culture. It shows the power of words and art combined.
