Three intersecting crosses stand before us. This is the Monument Haarlemmerweg War memorial. It wasn’t always like this.

The original monument was a simple white wooden cross. It was erected in 1947. This was a tribute to three resistance fighters. They were executed by the occupying forces on December 15 1944. Their names P J Elias H J Verkuyl and M Verkuyl are forever etched into the memory of this place.

These men paid the ultimate price. They fought for freedom. Their sacrifice is commemorated here. The original wooden cross bore a simple inscription. It named the victims and the date of their execution.

Over time the monument aged. The Haarlemmerweg itself underwent a significant transformation. The road was redesigned. The original monument had to be moved. In 2020 a new monument replaced the old one. This new design is made from corten steel. It is stronger and more modern. But it still honors the memory of those who died.

The new design also incorporates a poignant message. It simply says They gave their lives for freedom. This new memorial includes three amber trees. They symbolize the future and life. This carefully considered design reflects the lasting significance of this memorial. It honors the past while looking towards a peaceful future.

Each year on Remembrance Day this location becomes a focal point. People gather to honor the memory of those who gave their all. The site is more than just a monument. It is a place for quiet reflection. It is a solemn reminder of the cost of freedom.

The Monument Haarlemmerweg War memorial isn’t merely a structure. It’s a testament to resilience. It’s a symbol of hope springing from tragedy. It is a powerful reminder of the price paid for freedom. It is a place to remember. It is a place to reflect. It is a place to honor.
