Listen closely for the bells of the Mint Tower. They chime every fifteen minutes a constant reminder of Amsterdam’s rich history. This tower isn’t just a pretty face though. It’s a survivor a testament to the city’s resilience.

The Mint Tower stands proudly on Muntplein. Most Amsterdammers simply call it De Munt The Mint. That name though is a relatively recent addition. It stems from a crucial moment in Dutch history. The year was 1672. France England and other powers declared war on the Republic. Utrecht Amsterdam’s usual mint was occupied. Precious metals couldn’t be safely transported elsewhere. So what did Amsterdam do? They created a makeshift mint. Right here in the old guard house next to this very tower. For one year this tower became the heart of Amsterdam’s emergency coin production. Millions of ducats were minted. The name stuck.

The tower itself is older than its minting days. It’s a remnant of the Regulierspoort. That was one of the main gates in Amsterdam’s medieval city walls. Built between 1480 and 1487 the gate had two towers and a guardhouse. A fire in 1618 destroyed most of the gate but one tower survived. That’s the foundation of the Mint Tower you see before you. City architect Hendrick de Keyser redesigned it. He topped the existing base with an octagonal brick layer and a wooden spire. A clock and carillon were added. It was completed in 1620.

The carillon is particularly special. It boasts 38 bells. Most were added later but some are original Hemony bells. The Hemony brothers were renowned bell casters. Their bells are famous for their precise notes. The bells chime automatically every fifteen minutes. On Saturday afternoons though a city carillonneur plays live concerts. A real treat for the ears.

The guardhouse beside the tower has seen many changes too. Originally a guild hall it became an inn. Today it houses a shop. But even this seemingly modern building is part of Amsterdam’s ever evolving story. In 1939 a pedestrian passage connected the tower to the Muntgebouw. The entire square Muntplein is actually a wide bridge. Water still flows underneath it. The area has changed dramatically over the centuries. Buildings have been demolished and rebuilt. Yet the Mint Tower remains a constant a silent witness to Amsterdam’s incredible journey through time. So take a moment to appreciate this iconic structure. Let the bells ring in your ears.
