“A beacon of unity,” a visitor once murmured, standing before Milli Görüs in Heemskerk, “bridging cultures and generations.” Milli Görüs, a socio-religious movement, aims to integrate Muslims, primarily of Turkish descent, into Dutch society. It strives to balance maintaining their religious identity with active participation in their adopted homeland. The movement is guided by the Prophet Mohammed’s words: “The best among you are those who serve humanity.” Milli Görüs promotes human rights, respect for beliefs, and upholding the rule of law. These principles drive their work across various fields. Milli Görüs has about 50 affiliated organizations in the Netherlands. These include youth, women’s, and young women’s federations, each contributing to the movement’s diverse initiatives. At the heart of Milli Görüs is the active citizenship of its members. The movement embraces open dialogue with all groups, both within and outside the Islamic community. Milli Görüs emphasizes four key pillars: Integration, Emancipation, Participation, and Achievement. Integration focuses on ensuring both newcomers and established residents feel a sense of belonging in Dutch society. Emancipation encourages members to define their position within society while respecting cultural diversity. Milli Görüs believes in living within two cultures, not between them, creating a new identity that enriches both the individual and society. Participation emphasizes contributing positively to Dutch society through involvement in parent councils, community organizations, and political parties. Finally, Achievement promotes the Islamic principle of earning a livelihood through work. Milli Görüs recognizes that some face significant barriers to employment. They provide support to these vulnerable groups, helping them participate in society. The movement emphasizes leading by example, particularly for young people. This encourages them to navigate their own paths while staying true to their values. Milli Görüs seeks to contribute professionally and make its voice heard through actions. While they seek support when needed, they believe members must ultimately drive their integration, emancipation, participation, and achievement. Milli Görüs serves as a dynamic platform for connection, growth, and positive societal contribution.
