Mystery shrouds the Middenweteringbrug. This isn’t the Middenweteringbrug in Amsterdam. It’s a drawbridge near Vinkeveen, a village close to Utrecht. The Middenweteringbrug gracefully arches over the “Middenwetering” canal. This canal links the northern and southern Vinkeveense Plassen, a series of lakes. The bridge stands east of the fourth sand island, a unique feature of this area. The Middenweteringbrug isn’t just for boats. It caters to road traffic and cyclists too, with a central roadway and two dedicated cycle paths. A bridge keeper’s house on the west side controls the bridge. Slagbooms, or barriers, safeguard the bridge. If the bridge keeper isn’t around, boaters can summon them with a button. This is especially useful during the busy summer months when the Middenweteringbrug lifts frequently for pleasure boats. In winter, the bridge operates less often, with closures at certain times. Public transport no longer crosses the Middenweteringbrug. The congestion on summer days led to this decision. Initially, the bus route diverted to Provincial road 201 only on Sundays. Since late 2008, buses have completely bypassed the Baambrugse Zuwe, where the Middenweteringbrug is located. The bridge’s clearance when closed is a mere 0.95 meters, with a width of 9.1 meters. This height is measured relative to the Kanaalpeil, a local water level benchmark. It sits at -2.1 meters compared to NAP, the national reference point. Remember, water levels fluctuate, affecting clearance. The Middenweteringbrug has specific operating periods, varying between April 16th and October 15th. Outside these dates, a button near the bridge calls the bridge keeper. This also applies to the nearby Gemeenlandsevaartbrug.
