Picture this. You stand before Middelie a quaint village nestled in North Holland. Its history whispers tales of peat and fishing. Middelie wasn’t always a quiet village.

Middelie first appeared in records in 1277 as Homines de Middela meaning “the middle river”. Its location along waterways shaped its early development. It thrived as a peat excavation settlement. The village also served as a fishing hub connecting to the sea. The Purmer polder project however changed all that. Its connection to the sea was severed. Middelie’s growth slowed.

But Middelie’s story doesn’t end there. During the Reformation Mennonites found refuge in this small community. They became a significant portion of the population lasting into the 20th century. Their presence left an enduring mark. The village’s Mennonite church stands as a testament to this era. A modest aisleless building it replaced an earlier wooden structure in 1899. Today it hosts weddings meetings and concerts.

Imagine life in Middelie in 1840. The village was a separate municipality then. Its population was just 324. It remained independent until 1970. That’s when it joined Zeevang. Further changes came in 2016. Middelie became part of the municipality of Edam-Volendam.

Middelie’s story is one of resilience and adaptation. From a bustling peat and fishing village to a quieter community it retains its charm. It carries echoes of the past within its peaceful present. The spirit of the Mennonite settlers and the village’s original inhabitants remains tangible. Middelie stands as a captivating reminder of the enduring strength of community. Its story continues unfolding in the heart of North Holland.
