Here stands Menselijke Energie. It is more than just stone. It embodies human endeavor. This artwork is part of a series by Hildo Krop. They date back to 1921-1924. You will find Menselijke Energie on the Jozef Israelskade.

Krop created these works for two school buildings. They were the Hogere Burgerschool and a Handelsschool. The Pieter Lodewijk Takstraat separates them. Both buildings mirror each other in Amsterdamse School style. Symmetry defines this style. Krop’s four sculptures also reflect this symmetry.

Menselijke Energie appears twice on the left building. De geboorte van de daad appears twice on the right. These aren’t perfectly symmetrical. However they mirror each other on their respective risaliets.

So what does Menselijke Energie represent? First is a pregnant woman holding grapes. This symbolizes fertility. Next a man with spread arms and legs represents raw energy. Then there are figures holding items linked to trade. These refer to agriculture, industry, and commerce. The top three figures gaze southward. This signifies foresight vital for trade.

Some saw influences from ancient Egyptian art in Krop’s sculptures. The original sculptures were made of soft tuff stone. The elements took their toll over time. Wind, rain, and sun eroded the stone. By the early 21st century, they were badly damaged.

Ton Mooy was tasked to reconstruct them. He created new versions in harder Bavarian granite. Mooy meticulously carved the new sculptures in his studio.

These sculptures crown the Berlage Lyceum. They represent human energy in its various forms. It celebrates fertility, strength, and the spirit of commerce. The figures’ gaze reminds us to look ahead. They encourage us to strive for a better future.

The original Menselijke Energie suffered from erosion. A fragment survives in Steenwijk’s theater. Steenwijk is Krop’s birthplace. This fragment connects us to the past. It reminds us of the transient nature of materials.

The replicated Menselijke Energie stands as a testament to resilience. It honors Krop’s vision. It also honors Mooy’s craftsmanship. The statue is a symbol of enduring human spirit.

Take a closer look. Notice the details in the granite. Think about the message Krop wanted to convey. Consider the energy that these figures embody. They are not just statues. They are embodiments of human potential.

Now as you leave this spot remember Menselijke Energie. It stands as a beacon of hope. It celebrates human capabilities. May it inspire you to harness your own energy. May it inspire you to look towards the future.
