In 1958, a Dutch visionary named Martin Schröder took a leap of faith. He founded Martin’s Air Charter. Right here at the Martin Schröder Bust, we celebrate this aviation pioneer. He started small, with scenic flights over Amsterdam and tulip fields in a second-hand aircraft. He even took on cargo shipments. But Schröder dreamed bigger. Within two years, he acquired his first DC-3 and launched passenger flights to Palma de Mallorca. Martin’s Air Charter transformed into Martinair Holland in 1966. Under Schröder’s leadership, Martinair flourished. It became a global player in passenger and cargo transport. His innovative spirit led to a diverse fleet, including Boeing 747s, McDonnell Douglas MD-11s, and Airbus A320s. Schröder believed air travel should be accessible to everyone. This principle guided his work. His determination shaped not only Martinair but also its partnership with KLM. This ultimately led to the formation of Air France KLM Martinair Cargo. After 40 years, Schröder retired, having realized his childhood dream. He built Martinair into the second-largest airline in the Netherlands. His legacy continues to soar through the skies. His name, enshrined in this bust, represents a life dedicated to connecting people and places.
