Surely, you’ve noticed the sculpture of bread slices here at Meerwaldtplantsoen. This is the Manna War memorial. It stands as a reminder of a dark time and a symbol of hope.

The Manna War memorial commemorates Operation Manna during the Hunger Winter of 1945. Western Holland was starving. The German army had cut off food supplies.

In desperation, the Allies negotiated with the Germans for a temporary truce. It allowed them to drop food to the starving Dutch population. British RAF bombers and American USAAF planes filled the skies. They carried food parcels to those in need.

The operation was named “Manna” after the biblical story of food falling from heaven. To the starving people of Holland, it truly felt like a miracle. British soldiers distributed Swedish white bread. This bread became a symbol of liberation and survival.

Ram Katzir created this artwork to symbolize the Swedish white bread. The Manna War memorial serves not only as a monument. It is also a meeting place for the community. There is even talk of organizing an annual freedom meal. On May 5th people could share food from their own cultures.

Imagine the joy and disbelief of the Dutch people. They looked up to see Allied bombers overhead. The planes flew so low that they could see the aircrews waving. These missions were dangerous. The truce had not been officially signed. Yet the aircrews risked their lives to deliver food.

Many remember the personal recollections of the crewmembers. For many, these were the most rewarding missions. One pilot remembers flying over Holland. People had spelled out “Thank You” with rocks.

The Manna War memorial reminds us of the resilience of the human spirit. It reminds us of the importance of international cooperation. It stands as a symbol of hope amidst despair. Let this monument inspire us to never forget the lessons of the past. May it encourage us to build a better future for all.
