How many times a day do you think the Magere Brug opens? The answer might surprise you. We’re standing before the Magere Brug also known as the Skinny Bridge a charming wooden bascule bridge spanning the Amstel River in Amsterdam. This isn’t just any bridge. It’s a beloved landmark a symbol of romance and a fascinating piece of Amsterdam’s history.

The Magere Brug we see today isn’t the original. The first bridge on this very spot was built way back in 1691. It was known as the Kerkstraatbrug and had thirteen arches. But it was so narrow so skinny that locals nicknamed it the Magere Brug meaning Skinny Bridge.

Now the tale of its origins is a romantic one. Some say two sisters living on opposite sides of the Amstel commissioned its construction. They needed a way to visit each other daily. Another version suggests their last name was Mager giving the bridge its name. However recent research suggests the original plan was for a grand stone bridge. The 1672 economic downturn however forced a scaled-down version.

The bridge has been rebuilt several times. The current version dates back to 1934. Architect Piet Kramer designed it. It’s a marvel of engineering opening multiple times daily to allow river traffic to pass. Sightseeing boats are designed to fit under the closed bridge.

Until 1994 the bridge was opened and closed by hand. A complicated and dangerous job. Now it’s automatic. Since 2003 only pedestrians and cyclists are allowed to use it. Its white-painted wood looks beautiful. Especially at night when 1200 light bulbs illuminate it.

Locals consider the Magere Brug the most romantic bridge in Amsterdam. It’s a popular spot for proposals and lovers’ strolls. Legend says a kiss on the bridge or passing under it by boat ensures eternal love. The Magere Brug even appeared in the James Bond film Diamonds Are Forever.

So next time you’re in Amsterdam don’t just cross the Magere Brug. Take a moment to appreciate its unique history its charm its legendary romance. It’s more than just a bridge it’s a story waiting to be experienced.
